THE HISTORY OF TERRORISM: MORE THAN 200 YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT
The history of terrorism dates back at least 1500 years when Jewish resistance groups (66 - 72 A.D.) known as Zealots killed Roman soldiers and destroyed Roman property. The term assassin comes from a Shi'ite Muslim sect (Nizari Isma'ilis - also known as hashashins "hashish-eaters") fighting Sunni Muslims (1090 - 1275) and during Medieval Christendom resisting occupation during the Crusades (1095-1291). The hashashins were known to spread terror in the form of murder, including women and children. The brotherhood of Assassins committed terror so as to gain paradise and seventy-two virgins if killed and to receive unlimited hashish while on earth. The modern development of terrorism began during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror (1793 - 1794). During this period the term terrorism was first coined. Through the past two hundred years, terrorism has been used to achieve political ends and has developed as a tool for liberation, oppression, and international global politics.

Terrorism is “the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes.” according to Dictionary.com People participate in terrorism in order to achieve a change in politics when they have become unsatisfied with the way a government is working. Terrorism is a violent act against people or property with the intent to harm others to get a point across about dissatisfaction with government ways, such as seemingly unfair punishment, or disagreements about government affairs. The most obvious example of modern day terrorism is the attack that occurred on September 11th 2001. 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airline planes. Two of the planes were crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City, causing the buildings to collapse and resulting in the death of everyone on the plane as well as many in the buildings. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. All passengers on the planes were killed. Fifteen of the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, two were from the United Arab Emirates, one was from Egypt, and another was from Lebanon. Osama Bin Laden, the leader of the attacks stated that he had objections towards the American foreign policy towards Israel, and also wanted all American troops to leave Saudi Arabia after the Gulf War. Bin Laden and others wrote that “For more than seven years the United States has been occupying the lands of Islam in the holiest of places, the Arabian peninsula, plundering its riches, dictating to its rulers, humiliating its people, terrorizing its neighbors, and turning its bases in the peninsula into a spearhead through which to fight the neighboring Muslim peoples.”. Bin Laden translated the Torah words “slay the pagans wherever ye find them” to mean that it was the Muslim duty to kill the Americans. He said later in a letter to America: “You are the worst civilization witnessed by the history of mankind: You are the nation who, rather than ruling by the Shariah of Allah in its Constitution and Laws, choose to invent your own laws as you will and desire. You separate religion from your policies, contradicting the pure nature which affirms Absolute Authority to the Lord and your Creator.” This terrorist attack was a violent approach to solve conflicts that the terrorists saw as an insult from America.

ReplyDeleteThere are many reasons why people participate in terrorism. It may be to prove a point, be a hero to their country, or just out of pure hate. In some parts of the Middle East, terrorists are condidered heroes. They participate in terrorism because if they are successful in their mission, the people back home consider them local heroes. The people that participate in terrorism usually have a great amount of pride in their own country or beliefs. Modern day examples of terrorism are hijaking, suiside bombing, or a shooting of a large group of people. On September 11th, 2001, terrorists hijaked American planes and flew them into the World Trade Center in New York City. This killed thousands of people and affected the lives of Americans everywhere. In Iraq and Afghanistan, where our troops are fighting, there are countless suiside bombings every day. Terrorism has grown largely, and is now a major effect on people all over the world.

Fear is the third most powerful weapon in the world. No war has been won by total destruction, only enough damage to make the other side surrender. In a panic, people can't organize themself, leading to infighting(conflict amoungst themselves). People always seek the strongest of all weapons to use on each other, fear is a mere by-product of the weapons created. One side makes nukes and everyone panics, the other side makes them and the scales are balenced and no one is afraid.
